Cambridge Music Review :

Finally the mighty Pogues arrived, they may be older and more static (although James Fearnley was jumping around with his accordion for most of the set!) than when I last saw them but they make up for it in musicianship(featuring an eccentric collection of unusual stringed instruments), strength of songs and of course the legend that is Shane MacGowan. It was a greatest hits set, ‘Streams of Whiskey’, ‘Dirty Old Town’, ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’, ‘Sally MacLennane’ all good crowd pleasers. Shane left the stage a few times, but Spider Stacy and tin whistle filled in the front- man role perfectly, including a spirited ‘Jesse James’. Shane’s vocals seemed to improve as the show proceeded, by the time of ‘The Irish Rover’, he was on fine form. Shane said…’You’ve got a nice set-up here’, a bit of an understatement as they launched into ‘Fiesta’, an appropriate end to an amazing party..

Spider Stanley, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, et une balade romantique ...

Cambridge News :

The Pogues, Thetford Forest, Saturday, June 14
Thetford Forest is a funny place to watch a band like The Pogues.
Don’t get me wrong, it is magical driving through the trees as the sun in setting, with everyone clutching picnic baskets and rugs.
But will the celtic punk rockers – who are political, provocative and covered in the grime and glamour of 1980s London – fit into this genteel setting?
Support is given by Libertines’-esque Londoners Billy Vincent, as well as bonkers rockers Fat White Family, whose lead singer convulses madly in the style of Iggy Pop as he runs around the stage.
The crowd are slightly non-plussed but the band do put up a valiant effort.
At one point I look up and the lead singer has removed his shirt – for ostensibly no reason as it is really quite chilly.
But when The Pogues arrive on stage, the atmosphere shifts dramatically from a genteel picnic to a night of wild reveries.
The crowd is jittery as lead singer Shane MacGowan stumbles onto the stage, praying for the sobriety of their idol, who has long battled with alcoholism and substance abuse.
They needn’t have worried. MacGowan slurs, stumbles off the stage at random and smokes constantly - but is somehow utterly charming with enough charisma to reach even those at the back of the field.
Despite the troubles the band’s had, they appear to be getting along admirably and the other members seem almost like parents looking on fondly at a child as the band watch MacGowan wander around.
Accordion-player James Fearnley leaps about the stage like a grizzled sprite, fingers flying and a maniacal grin plastered across his face, while Peter ‘Spider’ Stanley stole my heart with his turn on the tin whistle.
Everyone knows their gloriously melancholy Christmas number ‘Fairytale of New York’ but there really is so much more to the band than that.
They play their 1985 masterpiece ‘Rum, Sodomy and the Lash’, as well as plenty of material from throughout their 32–year career.
There are romantic ballads (‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’), riotous drinking songs (Sally MacLennane’ and ‘The Boys from the County Hell’) and sing-a-longs (‘Fiesta’ and ‘Irish Rover’) which scare the birds from the trees.
The show descends into madness as cashmere-jumper clad parents grab the arms of long-serving fans with mohicans and I lose my drink as I’m whirled around by complete strangers.
The Pogues demonstrate this wonderful folky ability of making their audience nostalgic for lives they have never lived, and patriotic for a land that is not their own.
Their version of ‘Dirty Old Town’, made famous by The Dubliners and covered by everyone from The Specials to Rod Stewart, showcases the band’s way of finding romance in the pedestrian, and beauty within the grime of city life.
As I came up for air at the end, I realised I was not in a sticky-floored basement but a woodland clearing – which suddenly, somehow, felt entirely appropriate.
Stars out of five: ****

edp24 :
The Pogues, reviewed by Peter Walsh.

It wasn’t so much a Fairytale of New York as one in Thetford Forest as much-loved Celtic rockers The Pogues arrived in town.
Supported by Billy Vincent and Fat White Family, The Pogues took to the tree-lined forest stage on Saturday night for what would prove to be a 90 minute set brimming with Irish- folk-infused punk rock.
For one night only the heart of the forest setting which straddles both Norfolk and Suffolk was turned into a traditional Irish themed pub with the gig more like a jig and the crowd clearly loving the craic.
The band rolled back the years with tracks from their impressive back catalogue, including Dirty Old Town, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Bottle of Smoke, Fiesta and the glorious Irish Rover.
Years of drugs and alcohol misuse and abuse might have taken its toll on Shane MacGowan but the legendary frontman proved he still has the ability to command the stage.
The chain-smoking, chain-drinking singer, who had his own drinks table next to his microphone, left the stage on more than one occasion during the evening but each time returned to an ovation which showed the warmth and adulation with which this iconic musician is held.
It might have been the band’s first appearance in East Anglia for more than a decade, but it will live long in the memory.
The Pogues’ world-wide hit Fairytale of New York might not have featured but the band did at least ensure a Fairytale in the forest – even if Roy Hodgson’s England could not manage the same in the rainforest of Manaus a couple of hours later.
The gig was part of The Forestry Commission’s 2014 Forest Tours and followed appearances by Suede on Friday night and Rebecca Ferguson on Thursday.
And with the likes of Boyzone, Katherine Jenkins, and Deacon Blue still to come, it has been a summer to remember in East Anglia.

Je cite :
"The crowd is jittery as lead singer Shane MacGowan stumbles onto the stage, praying for the sobriety of their idol, who has long battled with alcoholism and substance abuse."

Pour moi le vrai supporter espère surtout une belle performance, les autres (la majorité ?) veulent voir la "bête" vomir...

Grapevinelive, 18 juin 2014 :
THE POGUES - THETFORD FOREST
They came with picnic chairs, quilts and rugs.  Families of fans of all ages… well perhaps some of the really young were there under protest.  Yes, Forest Live 2014 was underway in Thetford with Celtic Punk favorites The Pogues set to entertain.
Supporting the main act were Brixton based Fat White Family who earlier this year were deemed “unsuitable” to play at Somerset House as support to Franz Ferdinand.  Their brand of rhythmic, tribal, primal rock typified by their final number “Bomb Disneyland”, may not please everyone but I suspect we will hear more of this anarchic six piece.
As 9pm approached and the Johnny Cash incidental music was faded out, the forest was getting distinctly cool.  Rugs used for picnicking were recycled into wraps.  Men of a certain age in Pogues T-shirts made their way towards the stage as Shane McGowan appeared on stage with a “Hey up, we’ll be with you directly”.
These guys have been making music together for a long time and it showed in what followed.  I mean this kindly but The Pogues are an Irish Céilidh band, plugged in and with the dial turned up to 11.  McGowan’s incomparable vocals were not an issue – everyone in this crowd knows the words.
I particularly like “Tuesday Morning” when played live, the drum and bass beat infused with a banjo overlay just makes you want to dance.  The antics of accordion player James Fearnley as he jumped about the stage while playing his cumbersome instrument is always fun to watch.
Then suddenly it was all over, bar an encore.  They say time passes quickly when you are having a good time.  From what we saw of the crowd standing front of stage to those sitting around the periphery there were a lot of people having a good time.
